The "Peace Flower Bridge" project, a symbolic bridge to the future
and a message from Hiroshima to the world, is in progress near the Hiroshima
A-Bomb Dome in Naka Ward, Hiroshima. Streams of white ribbons spanning
the Ota River just upstream from the Aioi Bridge are already sending their
message of peace. Artists are working toward completion on August 6.
The "bridge" consists of thick fishing lines, 140-200 meter-long,
to which white vinyl tapes in the likeness of flowers are tied. The lines
span the river in a fan shape from the top of a condominium on one side
all the way to the other side of the river. The appearance of the bridge
changes dramatically depending on the direction and strength of the wind
on the river and other factors, including rain and the color of the sky.
The work began on July 2. So far, about 80,000 ribbons have been tied to
55 lines. Citizens and tourists purchase the "flowers" at 10
yen a piece and donate them. The goal is to have 1 million participants.
The project was planned by the "Executive Committee for One Million Ten-yen Flower Offerings," led by Kazunari Nitta, a 47-year-old artist from Kure. Volunteers keep watch on the bridge 24 hours a day until completion. The committee is inviting contributions from the community and from the Internet supporters.
