Peace Watch Clock to be installed in Peace Memorial Museum 07/24/01

The clock portion of the "Peace Watch Tower," which displays such information as the number of days since the last nuclear test, has been completed. On July 24, the clock will be transported from a plant in Narashino, Chiba, to the ground floor lobby of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum East Wing (Naka Ward, Hiroshima) for installation. The clock will be unveiled on August 6.

The 3.1 meter-tall clock, designed by Atsuo Okamoto, a sculptor from Hiroshima, was built with the help of a Tokyo clock manufacturer. It contains an analog clock showing the current time. Under the analog clock, two digital clocks display the days since the most recent nuclear test and since August 6, 1945, when the A-bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.

In July 2000, a nonprofit organization, "Peace Watch Club" (President: Makoto Hata), used the Internet and other means to launch a movement to erect the Peace Watch Tower. The clock tower will be donated to the city after installation.

Katsuhiko Doi, a (62) ex-high school teacher from Saiki Ward, works in the secretariat of the organization. Doi says, "Erecting the clock is not the end of this project. The real work starts here. We hope this will continue to send a warning to the world, that nuclear weapons still exist."
