外国でも平和を話し合うために

English Challenge

涼しく、過ごしやすくなってきました。もっと寒くなると、夏が恋しくなるんですよね。前回の課題（他の人や動物を助けた経験を教えてください）について興味深いエッセーが送られてきました。その中の一つ、呉市のMackeyさんのエッセーを取り上げます。

日本で大学生活を送ったMackeyさんは、留学生会館で暮らしていました。英語があまりしゃべれないながらも、いろんな国の人たちに日本語を教えたり、国内旅行の案内をしたりしました。大学を卒業してからも英語を勉強し、今も何人かと手紙や電子メールを通じて連絡を取り合っています。日本に暮らしながら英語を役立てているいい例になっていると言えます。

Mackeyさんは続けます。「At that time, I thought I was helping them. But, in truth, they helped me to open my own mind. （当時、私がみんなを助けていると思っていました。しかし、実際には、私が心を開くよう、みんなが助けてくれていたのです）」。誰かを助けることによって、心が豊かになるのですね。とても大切だと思います。私たちの暮らしは、他の人とのかかわりによって充実したものになります。自分の殻に閉じこもっていては何も変わりません。

この考え方は、今回のひろしま国の特集テーマ、そして英語に挑戦の課題にもつながります。

What experiences have you had helping other people or animals? Choose one and tell me about it!

「他の人や動物を助けた経験から１つ選んで教えてください。」

I had a very interesting experience not long ago. I saw an old antique car parked in front of the Chugoku Shimbun and I discovered that the family driving it is from Argentina. They are family of six: the father, the mother, and four small children. And they are traveling around the world in this car! This is their dream! Now they are in Japan, driving from city to city. When they were in Hiroshima, I got their telephone number and called the father. I asked him: "Where did you sleep last night?" He said: "We slept in a tent in a parking lot. It was really hot." I felt bad for them, especially for the children, and so I paid for them to stay at a hotel that night. The next morning I met them at the hotel and gave them a bag of food for their journey. I was happy I could help them continue to pursue their dream!

つい最近のことです。私は中国新聞ビルの前に、古い、アンティークな車が止まっているのを見つけました。車には、アルゼンチンから来た家族が乗っていました。父、母、４人の子どもたち計６人は、車で世界一周をしていたのです！これが家族の夢だった、とのこと。ちょうど日本の都市を巡っていました。電話番号を教えてもらった私は、父親に電話して「昨夜はどこに泊まったんですか」と聞くと「駐車場にテントを張って寝た。すごく暑かった」とのこと。特に子どもたちがかわいそうで、その夜、私がお金を出してホテルに泊まってもらいました。翌朝、６人とホテルで会い、旅の途中で食べてもらうよう、食べ物の入った袋をあげました。彼らが夢を追い続ける手助けができて幸せな気分になりました。

Ms. Mickey :	Thanks for writing another essay. I enjoyed it very much. It sounds like you had fun living in the international dormitory. I often wish I had a stronger "international awareness" when I was younger. I never really thought much about life outside the United States until after I graduated from college. Anyway, I look forward to your next essay!
Ms. MURATA :	To tell the truth, I worked in a number of restaurants when I was in high school and college. I was a busboy (cleaning up tables), a waiter, and a cook. It's hard to believe I was a cook back then because now I can't cook anything at all! Those were fun times, although the restaurants were very busy and the work was hard. I can't imagine working in a restaurant again!

今回は、自分が住んでいる（いた）地域について考えてみましょう。「地域の行事で、近所の人たちとの強い結び付きを感じたことがありますか」です。まず私が子どものころについて記したエッセーを読んでください（私は米国イリノイ州にあるミシシッピ川沿いの小さな街で育ちました）。そして皆さんのエピソードを教えてください。

Can you give me an example of when the people of your neighborhood came together and showed a strong spirit of community?

Halloween will be here soon, on October 31. When I was a child, Halloween was a time when I felt a strong spirit of community in my neighborhood. Life in America has changed since I was a child -- it's not as safe these days, I'm afraid -- but back then, children wore costumes and went from house to house in the neighborhood collecting candy. We could even go up to the houses of people we didn't know. A number of houses had scary decorations and some adults giving out the candy has costumes on, too. There was a lot of excitement in the air on Halloween night and everyone enjoyed it. It was the only time of the year, in fact, when the whole community took part in a shared activity. It was a good feeling, but my favorite part, of course, was eating all that delicious candy!
