On August 9th, the day the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, the A-bombed city of Hiroshima held several events to mourn the Nagasaki dead and pray for peace.
On the waterfront terrace on the opposite side of the river from the A-bomb Dome in Naka-ku, Hiroshima City, about 60 city residents held candles and mourned Nagasaki's A-bomb victims.
At 8:00 p.m., participants lit their hand-made candles from the main candle. Some closed their eyes, others sat and talked quietly. Gazing at the tiny flames reflecting off the water surface, each prayed quietly in his or her own way.
It was the first such event organized by the women's group Candles on the Waterfront, which was launched this year in response to the war on Iraq.
Member Tomoko Watanabe (49) (Midorii, Asa-Minami-ku) stressed, "We want the people of Hiroshima to take on Nagasaki's pain as our own."
