The Gensuikin and Gensuikyo world conferences against A-and H-bombs held plenary sessions on the 9th and completed their scheduled events in Nagasaki. Both adopted declarations calling for abolition of nuclear weapons, criticizing US unilateralism, and promoting changes in nuclear policies.
About 2,800 participants attended the closing session of the Gensuikin conference. Conference Chairman Fukuyama wrapped up the conference calling on participants to, "..widen the circle of the global peace and anti-nuclear movement." The conference declaration pointed to the "..realistic fear that nuclear weapons may be used" as the likelihood of a US attack on Iraq increases. It also called on all parties to use the UN to resolve the situation.
About 2,500 participants attended the final Gensuikyo plenary session that adopted a Nagasaki Appeal calling for the nuclear-weapons states to fulfil their promise of an "unequivocal undertaking" to eliminate nuclear weapons. Gensuikyo General Secretary Hiroshi Takakusaki, who gave the closing address, called for an effort to, "..spread through the world at the grassroots level the attitude that we absolutely will not tolerate the use of nuclear weapons."
