YANGON, Aug. 9 Kyodo -- Fourteen political prisoners, including six members of the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD), were released from various jails Friday, according to an official press release.
The latest releases mean 352 political prisoners, including non-NLD prisoners, have been released since secret dialogue between pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi's NLD and the junta began in October 2000, although 255 other NLD members still remain in jails.
Out of the 352 freed, 303 are NLD members.
Other prisoners who pose no threat to the community nor peace and stability of the country will be released, the press release added.
Suu Kyi, the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize winner, was released from nearly 20 months of house arrest on May 6.
In freeing Suu Kyi, the junta issued a statement saying it would allow all citizens to participate freely in the political process while prioritizing national unity, peace and stability.
The NLD won a landslide victory in the 1990 general elections but the junta refused to allow the legislature to be convened and jailed scores of NLD members.
