Nagasaki to pay treatment costs for A-bomb survivor in Canada '02/8/6

NAGASAKI, Aug. 6 Kyodo -- The city of Nagasaki said Tuesday it will pay travel and other expenses under a newly launched state support program for a man who survived the 1945 U.S. atomic bombing and currently living in Canada.

Government officials in the southwestern Japan city said the man will be the first recipient of treatment and healthcare allowances in Japan under the program for victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, called ''hibakusha'' in Japanese, who live abroad and return to Japan for treatment.

In March, the cabinet approved a revision of a decree under the A-bomb survivors assistance law so that the victims will no longer have to renew their hibakusha health cards every time they travel to Japan to receive treatment.
