Japanese, Korean musicians, priests plan A-bomb event
HIROSHIMA, Aug. 3 Kyodo - Musicians and Buddhist priests from Japan and the Korean Peninsula will hold a festival Sunday in Hiroshima in remembrance of the victims of World War II, with songs, dances and sutra chanting, organizers said Thursday.
The event, being held for the first time, will take place in a park in Hiroshima's Naka Ward on the anniversary of the 1945 atomic bombing of the city by the United States.
Among the artists to perform in the event are the Okinawa band Shokichi Kina and Champloose, and Tomoe Sawa, the first Japanese singer to perform in Seoul after the war.
There will also be dance numbers by North Korean actor Lee Mi Nam and a masked dance by a South Korean troupe led by Mu Se Chung.
Also on the day, 24 bonzes from Japan and North and South Korea will hold a joint Buddhist memorial service, the organizers said.
The performers have offered their services free, but there will be an entrance fee of 3,000 yen to pay for the stage construction costs, they said.
The organizers said they plan to make the event an annual one so that people who feel the annual peace ceremony on the same day is too ceremonial can feel free to join in.
